Windwood Farm by Rebecca Patrick-Howard

Windwood Farm
By Rebecca Patrick-Howard

Windwood Farm has a terrible secret–one that’s been buried for more almost 100 years. Taryn Magill aims to uncover it…or die trying.

As a mixed media artist and urban explorer with a love for abandoned houses and a big imagination when it comes to the past, 30 year old Taryn has never really met an old house she didn’t like. In fact, she’s made a career out of painting these sad, often derelict structures, to show them in their former glory for her clients.

With Windwood Farm, though, she might have bitten off more than she can chew!

The locals refer to it as “the devil’s house” and even vandals have stayed away from this once grand stone farmhouse in Vidalia, Kentucky. Hired by the Stokes County Historical Society to paint it before it’s demolished by a land development company, Taryn’s determined to make friends with the house and farm everyone around her seems to be terrified of.

As it turns out, though, their fears may just not be unfounded.

Who is the woman whose cries echo throughout the farm and what does she want? What negative force about the house is so powerful that it won’t even allow the upstairs bedroom to be touched? Does the 93 year old vanishing of the next door neighbor have anything to do with the house’s mysteries?

Taryn wants the answers to these and the house may just be trying to tell her because now, when she looks through her camera, she doesn’t have to use her imagination to see the past–

SHE CAN SEE IT!

Will Taryn be able to figure out what happened here AND escape with her sanity and life before the house comes down? Because now it seems like someone is trying to kill her! Using what her camera reveals to her and her wits, she’ll try to unravel the mysteries of the farm and get out before it’s too late.

The first book in the Taryn’s Camera series.

An interview with author Ann Simas, Loose Ends

An interview with the author of Loose Ends, Ann Simas

1 - Why do you write paranormal fiction?
I don’t know if there’s a single reason that answers why I like to write paranormal fiction. As a kid, I loved reading ghost mysteries. As an adult, I still love reading all kinds of paranormal fiction and nonfiction. I’ve also heard anecdotal stories from family members over the years that intrigue me. Those range from near-death experience to seeing the Blessed Virgin to getting “feelings” about upcoming events. Let’s face it, there are just too many things that happen that are inexplicable. No one can say definitively whether or not they are real—or not real. As a writer, that pretty much gives me free license to explore and to include ghosts, psychic dreams, near-death experiences, mystical Hopi beliefs, and many other paranormal elements in my stories.

2 - Have you ever had a paranormal experience? If so, please tell us about it.
Two things come to mind immediately. One is waking in the middle of the night and seeing the faces of two family members I loved very much who had died. There was also a third face of someone else I didn’t immediately recognize. The next morning, I learned my sister’s father-in-law, who I had known for some time, had died during the night. I think the reason the faces didn’t frighten me was because they were somehow letting me know it was okay. He’d had a long, happy life and had gone peacefully.

The other incident was what I can only describe as an out-of-body experience. I was cognizant of being awake, then being outside my body, moving around, but not going far. Later, thinking about it, analyzing it, I always thought I was so stunned (though not frightened) by what was happening, that I didn’t “go with the flow,” so the experience was short.

3 - Tell us about your next project.
Next up is my first mystery, entitled Dressed to Die. This is the first book in the Grace Gabbiano Mysteries. Don’t be disappointed—this book has no paranormal happenings, which is not to say that there won’t be at some point down the road. The other mystery series I’m working on is the Andi Comstock Paranormal Mysteries. The first book is entitled Holy Smoke. You might glean from the title that the book has a little something holy going on, as well as something smoky, and you’d be right. For a peek at the covers and the back-cover blurbs on both these books, just go to my website, annsimas.com.

I’d also like to mention two other books I had released this summer, both of which have paranormal elements. Blessed Are the Eagles is laced with supernatural happenings related to mystical Hopi beliefs. In Loose Ends, my protagonist has psychic dreams that foretell violent death. Eagles was a Romance Writers of America Finalist a few years ago, but although it has a love story, it is more a mystery/suspense with paranormal aspects. Loose Ends is a sexy thriller with psychic overtones and a love story. What can I say? I like to write cross-genre, paranormal fiction!

4 - How are you like - and unlike - your main character?
I suppose there’s a little bit of me in every female protagonist I write. They are tenacious, industrious, moral, funny, loyal, and smart. Like me, they have other character traits and flaws, because none of us are perfect, are we? I give them adventures and relationships that are not always easy. Again, the road through life is not easy, but the challenges they face are character-building. I live vicariously through them, I suppose. It keeps my mind active, trying to figure out how they’ll get from point A to point B in an exciting way that will keep my readers enthralled. They face hurdles, not always without getting hurt, but they will be stronger for it in the end. Their reward, I admit, is a happily-ever-after ending.

5 - How and where do you work?
I have a home library with a beautiful cherry desk built for me by my husband. I am surrounded by hundreds of mostly reference books, which is convenient when I’m writing. I work on a laptop, which took some getting used to after using a Mac and a PC previously. I love it now. I can take my laptop and my work with me wherever I go, if I need to be on the road.

I also design all my own covers. I have a graphics background, and a good eye for design, so it works out well for me. I do my own PR and maintain my website myself. I also have an Author page on Facebook, and I’d be thrilled if all your blog readers would “like” me.

Loose Ends by Ann Simas

Loose Ends
By Ann Simas

Every six years, Jessica Myer has a nightmare and someone she knows dies. This time, inexplicably, more dreams follow at three-week intervals. Each time, a woman Jessie doesn’t know is brutally raped and murdered. When she dreams her best friend will be next, Jessie comes up with the idea of hiring a body guard to keep her safe. McKinley West has no idea what he’s letting himself in for… The moment Mac meets Jessie, there’s something about her he can’t resist, but that doesn’t mean his corporate security firm will take on a two-day body-guarding job for a crackpot! Even he can’t believe he hires on when she comes back asking a second time. The assignment is not the slam-dunk Mac anticipates—Jessie is summoned to the county morgue to identify her friend’s body less than twenty-four hours later. Things aren’t always what they seem... Despite repeated warnings to keep out of the investigation, Jessie is driven by guilt and her dreams to find out if the murders are connected to an article her friend was researching about sex ads in the local weeklies. Pornography. Snuff films. Drugs. Lies. Jessie becomes entangled in a web of deceit that grows more complex the deeper she digs. And then Jessie dreams of her own death… Mac is skeptical of psychic mumbo-jumbo, but he believes in Jessie. Will they be able to find the killers before Jessie’s latest dream—the one of her own death—comes true?

Ann Simas lives in Oregon, but she is a Colorado girl at heart, having grown up in the Rocky Mountains. She is an avid reader since childhood and penned her first fiction "book" in high school. She particularly likes to write mystery/suspense/thriller with a love story and paranormal elements.

An award-winning watercolorist and a budding photographer, Ann also enjoys needlework and gardening in her spare time. She is her family's "genealogist" and has been blessed with the opportunity to conduct first-hand research in Italy for both her writing and her family tree. Some of her Italy photos are displayed on her home page at annsimas.com. The genealogy research from decade's old documents in Italian, she says, has been a supreme but gratifying challenge.

The Seat of Magic by J. Kathleen Chaney

The Seat of Magic
By J. Kathleen Chaney

Magical beings have been banned from the Golden City for decades, though many live there in secret. Now humans and nonhumans alike are in danger as evil stalks the streets, growing more powerful with every kill….

It’s been two weeks since Oriana Paredes was banished from the Golden City. Police consultant Duilio Ferreira, who himself has a talent he must keep secret, can’t escape the feeling that, though she’s supposedly returned home to her people, Oriana is in danger.

Adding to Duilio’s concerns is a string of recent murders in the city. Three victims have already been found, each without a mark upon her body. When a selkie under his brother’s protection goes missing, Duilio fears the killer is also targeting nonhuman prey.

To protect Oriana and uncover the truth, Duilio will have to risk revealing his own identity, put his trust in some unlikely allies, and consult a rare and malevolent text known as The Seat of Magic….

Bio:
J. Kathleen Cheney is nothing if not versatile in her story telling, but weaving through her work is a common thread, that of the improbable heroine. From worlds set in humanity's distant post-apocalyptic future to alternate worlds of today or of the near past, Kathleen's heroines include a siren who with help from a gentleman of the city must stop a regicidal plot, the neglected daughter of an absent king coming to terms with her shapeshifting ancestors, a blind teenager who dreams of others' deaths and who uses her gift of touch to find their killers, and the widow of a trainer who with a most unusual horse must save her farm and way of life. All use their unusual gifts and talents to overcome obstacles and find their place in the world.

In 2005 Kathleen decided to pursue writing as a full-time endeavor and has since enjoyed seeing her stories published in Shimmer, The Sword Review, and Baen's Universe. Her novella "Iron Shoes" was a 2011 Nebula nominee. Kathleen twice attended the summer Writer's Workshop at the Center for the Study of Science Fiction under the tutelage of James Gunn. She lists C. J. Cherryh, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Georgette Heyer among the writers who influenced her most--as well as Ansen Dibell, whose ghostly fingerprints can be seen all over her work.

Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Kathleen's parents actually were rocket scientists (they worked at White Sands Missile Range), which made for interesting dinner-time conversations. After graduating with degrees in English and Marketing she worked as a menswear buyer for retail department store chains before changing careers to become a teacher, where she taught mathematics ranging from 7th Grade Arithmetic up to Calculus. Kathleen also served a brief stint as a Gifted and Talented Specialist. She coached the Academic Team and the Robotics Team and was the Chess Club sponsor.

When not writing, Kathleen likes to don a mask and get sweaty fencing, both foil and saber. Quieter hobbies include putting on her Wellingtons and getting her hands dirty in the garden. She also enjoys traveling and taking care of her dogs. Two large, hairy, dogs.

Interview with author Madison Johns

An interview with author Madison Johns

1 - I like the older characters in your book. What made you decide to go in that direction?

I worked as a nursing care assistant in both a nursing home and hospital and really enjoyed the senior citizens I cared for. Many of them had interesting lives and were very much spunky seniors. It was this experience that inspired me to create Agnes and Eleanor.

2 - Why do you want to write paranormal books?

I dabbled in it with Grannies, Guns and Ghosts, but I wanted to dig deeper. I love writing mystery and the added paranormal theme makes it all the more interesting to write.

3 - Have you ever had a paranormal experience?

I lived in a townhouse where the basement door opened at will it seemed, but since I can easily explain that away I’d say no.

4 - What's your next project?

I’m working on another Agnes paranormal book. In their next adventure they’re going to a western ghost town.

5 - Describe the way you write?

I don’t outline, or very little and just sit down and it flows out. I like to write in the middle of the night, long after everyone has gone to bed and it’s quiet.

What Dreams May come by Beth M. Honeycutt

What Dreams May Come
By Beth M. Honeycutt

Reality is overrated. Or so Ellie Cross has always believed.
Ellie is an ordinary, nothing-special girl who feels invisible most of the time. She’s the kind of girl who would loan her lunch money to anyone, but she’s definitely not the kind of girl to get noticed. Well, except by her mom, who constantly nags her not to be such a dreamer, and the class bully who makes her life miserable. It’s kinda grim for a girl who’s already painfully shy and all-too-aware that she “takes work.”
But Ellie has a best friend, someone she can turn to whenever she has a problem. Well, some might call him an imaginary friend, since they’ve never actually met outside of dreams.
And, sure, Ellie knows it’s kinda weird to have a friend no one else can see, but since her real-world friends currently number one, she figures an imaginary friend can only improve her social life. Even better, since he isn’t real, she can tell dream-guy-Gabe anything, without ever worrying that he’ll ditch her for someone cooler or embarrass her by blabbing her secrets. And so what if she happens to have an itsy-bitsy crush on her reality-challenged friend? Who’s it hurting, really?
But things are about to get complicated, because there’s a new guy in school—a guy with hauntingly familiar eyes. A guy who knows things about Ellie that he shouldn’t have any way of knowing…

Bio:
A professional writer and editor, Beth has written everything from poetry and short stories to proposals for government contracts, science textbooks, and standardized tests (yes, you have her to thank for those!). Her real love is writing fiction, though, especially YA. She loves to travel and has been to nine different countries (more if you count layovers!). At home or abroad, she can usually be found with her head in a book or madly scribbling down ideas for a book of her own. She loves spending time with family, stories of all kinds, and happy endings. She firmly believes in the enduring power of love.

When a full skeleton is later excavated, Kath can’t help but wonder if it’s somehow connected to Geneva, the ghost who haunts her shop, and whom she met at this very site. After Phillip is found dead, it’s up to Kath to thread the clues together before someone else becomes history.

Soul Dancing with the Brass Band by Vicki Renfro

Have you ever wondered if you have lived before? Hillary, a farm girl from Kansas, never gave it a second thought. She always believed her big adventure would be going away to college until she learned about a promise she had made two thousand years ago.

"Soul Dancing with the Brass Band" is an amazing read! It is a page turner, fast and engrossing. The parallel stories are brilliantly done, making the reader want more. There are layers to this story filled with enlightening information that gives the reader a new perspective on life on this planet in this dimension. And it reminds me to go inward to discover who I am. The author shows us that there is magic in life.
Vicki Renfro is an excellent story-teller! I cannot wait for the sequel!

An interview with author Sharon Pape

An Interview with author Sharon Pape

Why did you start writing?

I started writing little stories as soon as I learned how to put words together to form sentences. It was never a question of why, or how or maybe I’d rather be doing something else.
You see, my mind has a habit of taking something mundane and thinking, “what if?” which inevitably leads to a story idea. If I don’t write the story, the idea sits in my head and nags at me. Plus my head tends to get awfully overcrowded if I don’t download the stories from time to time.  So I guess the answer to your question is that I started writing, because I had no choice in the matter - and still don’t.

I once asked my adult daughter if she thought I would ever stop writing when I got old. Her answer was: “I don’t think you’ll ever stop writing, Mom, but at a certain point it probably won’t make sense anymore.” After I finished laughing, I decided to take that as a challenge.

What do you like about paranormal?

For starters, I love fiction of all genres, because it involves imagination. When you add paranormal elements to fiction, the result is imagination on steroids. You’re no longer constrained by the limits of reality. You’re free to explore questions that have no clear answers. My first three novels were paranormal, but back in the dark ages before computers, there was no such genre. The books were lumped together with horror titles where they didn’t really belong. In these more enlightened times, the paranormal has finally found a comfortable home. When I decided to try my hand at writing mysteries, it was second nature for me to add paranormal elements.

Have you ever seen a ghost?

No, but I have a friend who’s certain that a former owner of her house has been hanging around as a benign ghostly presence. Although she’s never actually seen him, when her children were younger they talked about a man who came to play with them. (In case you’re concerned that he was a molester who snuck in, please be assured that my friend was always at home with the kids and the doors were locked.)

Although I like to write about ghosts, I don’t think I’d necessarily like to see one - unless he’s like marshal Zeke Drummond from my Portrait of Crime mysteries.

What is your next project?
Funny you should ask. I just saw the post for your new cozy series featuring retired witches. As it happens, I’m working on a book about sorcery. “What if” there’s something strange afoot that’s drawing authors to that subject? Uh oh, I feel another idea coming on!

An Interview with paranormal author Donna Galanti

Interview with Author Donna Galanti

Q: Congratulations on the re-release of your debut novel, A Human Element, book one in the Element Trilogy. When did you start writing and what got you into paranormal?
A: I have been writing since I could hold a pencil. I knew I was born to be a writer. It’s all I ever burned to do. I began writing plays and acting them out with neighborhood kids when I was seven and moved to short stories as I became a tween. When my mother died five years ago I began writing novels out of my grief. I write from the dark side and enjoy creating empathy for both the hero and the villain by blurring the lines between good and evil. I am fascinated by the power of the brain and how little we use, and I especially enjoy using the paranormal elements of mind control to shake the foundation of my character’s world.  Writing in the paranormal allows me to tap into the “what if”. What if we possessed the power to do the unbelievable? And what if we could use those powers to heal – or to kill? This is what I write about in the Element Trilogy.
Q. Book 2 in the Element Trilogy, A Hidden Element, releases August 28th. What’s it about?
A: In A Hidden Element evil lurks within...One family must risk everything to defeat an enemy that wants to rule the world with their son, but their enemy’s own son may be their only hope to escape—if he survives.
A Hidden Element contains universal elements that people can relate to; abandonment, loss, redemption, acceptance, grief—and yearning for something you can never have. While there are paranormal and science fiction elements to A Hidden Element, there are some very real dimensions played out. These include the tensions between fathers and sons, and the dilemma posed of how far a parent will go to save a child.
Q: Tell us something interesting about your main character in A Hidden Element.
A: Caleb lives an oppressed life. He has sons he can’t be a father to, he can’t choose who he loves, and he must carry out despicable acts just to survive. Yet Caleb finds he is pushed to the wall even further and must risk the very things he desires to save those he loves. Caleb is also a Watcher in a way, and Watchers are some of my favorite characters to write. Read an article I wrote about this theme.
Q: What’s inside the mind of a suspense author?
A: Never ending dialogue. Scenes of evil doers and people in peril. Tormented villains getting revenge, and then their comeuppance. Steamy lovers in a survival showdown. Yep, it’s generally dark in there full of murder, mystery, and mayhem!
Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

A: I am adopted and an only child, which both come to play in my books, and I love being alone! My other loves are bicycling, kayaking, and reading. I was a bit of a nomad until I settled into the career of novelist going from being a U.S. Naval photographer stationed in Hawaii to marketing bomb detection devices to running my own resume writing service.
Q: What are your current projects?

A: I am now plotting the third and final book in the Element Trilogy, A Healing Element, and also a young adult medieval fantasy series. I also write children’s books and in 2015 have the first two books coming out in my middle grade adventure fantasy series, Joshua and the Lightning Road. In book 1, Joshua Cooper learns the hard way that lightning never strikes by chance, when a bolt strikes his house and whisks him on an adventure to a world where stolen kids are work slaves for the frustrated heirs of the Greek Olympians. Q: Any final words for writers who dream of being published one day?

A: Get out of your writer’s cave and join writer communities and organizations now, no matter what level of writing you are at. Also, I wish I’d learned about how to write a book before writing my first book. I took writing workshops after I finished that first book and it required going back and fixing a ton of things! However, I don’t regret the learning that took place afterwards because it taught me how to write a better book from the beginning. Keep learning your craft and keep filling your writer’s toolbox! And remember that this writing business is not GOING to be easy – it’s going to be worth it! Visit my Writers Corner for inspiration, advice, and resources on writing.

Hi! I'm Milly (AKA April Angel) I love to write sexy stories. They're usually either paranormal or contemporary with a large dose of heat. My paranormal stories can be anything from wolf-shifters (my favorites) to witches, demons and anything in between. I was born the prettiest part of the Caribbean known as the Dominican Republic. Currently, I live in New York City with my hubby, the bossy kiddo and our little dog "Needy Speedy". Don't ask.

When I'm not working some really long hours at the day job, or hanging out in the awful life-sucking invention known as Facebook, messaging my bestie in the UK or shopping with my sis Julie, then I can be found watching scary movies. Buuut when I'm not doing that, I'm usually writing because the voices won't shut up.

I am addicted to shoe shopping, chocolate (but who isn't, right?) and Dunkin' Donuts coffee.

Come by and visit me! I love to meet new readers!

For Everything A Season By Sharon Pape

From a review by Phillip Nork: The book starts out in the 1600's when the Salem witch trails were held. An older lady 'sees' a man fall to his death in her dreams. This lady, Emily Hawkins, is put to death because the villagers think she is a witch. Just before she hangs she gives a warning that she is not a witch but that she can see the future and she tells the crowd that one person lives in the neighborhood and from his line a child will be born who will bring destruction beyond their worst imaging. A little girl thinks she knows who this other person is and a crowd goes to his house and burns his house down with him in it.

Forward to the 1980's and a thirty-something single lady named Debra takes a summer job at a kid's camp in a small town called Rachael Crossings and the fun begins. The only place left to rent is an old house, a haunted house according to the locals, but no one tells Debra about it.

The story continues and Debra meets a man, but is he real? In her thirty years of being alive Debra never met a man she could love but she falls for this one. Maybe it's all a dream.
